Private data covering 500 million Facebook users has been posted online in some low-level hacking gathering.
A user in a low-level hacking panel announced the phone numbers and personal information of 100 million Facebook users for free online. Security researchers caution that hackers could utilize the data to represent people and perform fraud.
Leaked data report
The distributed data comprises private information of over 500 million Facebook users of 106 countries. This includes above 30 million records on users in the US, 11 million on users within the UK, and 6 million on Indian users. It holds user’s phone numbers, Facebook IDs, full names, places, bios, and – in some cases – email Ids.
Insider examined a sample of the leaked data and checked several records. This is by approaching known Facebook users’ phone numbers with the details set’s IDs. We further verified reports by testing email addresses from the data set in Facebook’s password reset point, which can be used to expose a user’s telephone number partially.
The whole complete dataset is posted on the hacking gathering for open, getting it widely obtainable to anyone by basic data skills.
All 533,000,000 Facebook records were just leaked for free.
This means that if you have a Facebook account, it is extremely likely the phone number used for the account was leaked.
I have yet to see Facebook acknowledging this absolute negligence of your data. https://t.co/ysGCPZm5U3 pic.twitter.com/nM0Fu4GDY8

Facebook earlier promised to break down on core data-scraping after Cambridge Analytica scoured the data of 80 million users in the crime of Facebook’s terms of cooperation to target citizens with partisan ads in the 2016 polls.
An insider told a Facebook spokesperson said the newsgroup that the data scoured through a now-fixed vulnerability.
While two years old, the leaked information could contribute important info to cybercriminals, who use people’s private information to represent them or scam them toward giving over login credentials. According to Alon Gal, CTO of cybercrime report firm Hudson Rock, who first saw the whole trough of leaked data online.
Huge security breaching
A database of the same size, including private information such as phone numbers of several of Facebook’s users, would indeed point to wrongdoers taking benefit of the data to misbehave social engineering strikes or hacking trials.
The crime touched more than 533 million users crossing 106 countries, according to Insider, and carries more than 32 million accounts for users in the United States.
Facebook — the world’s most successful social media site drawn rebukes by well over 2 billion users before handling people’s data.
In 2019, the Federal Trade Commission penalized the company $5 billion. It claimed that it misrepresented users about how third parties such as promoters reached their personal information.
Facebook did not admit fault. However, its agreement with the administration included the most massive privacy-breaking fine in American history.
After reports, the FTC started investigating that Cambridge Analytica. It is a firm that served with former President Donald Trump’s campaign. FTC had inappropriately accessed names, “likes,” and other data for millions of users without their permission.
