ActRaiser Renaissance is a remake of a 1990’s title from the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It’s out now on the Nintendo Switch.
The reboot of the ‘90s title is an announcement that not many people see coming as part of today’s Nintendo Direct presentation. Not only has there not been a word about its redo beforehand, it’s also a title quite obscure to many. But here is ActRaiser Renaissance, nonetheless, and it comes as a package that significantly improves upon the original.
Drastic changes
From the outset, AR feels completely redrawn, which gives it a sharper and smoother look than the original. It’s a nice approach that sees a classic title given a modern treatment in the visual department. Consequently, also making it easier for newer audiences to adopt because of its immersive graphics.
But while being quite an eye-candy may be the selling point of the game, it’s more so about gameplay. One which is divided into two parts: the action-oriented, 2D platforming, Realm Acts, and the city-building aspect, Realm Management. Both of which playing substantial role with one another in making the experience better for the player.
Realm Acts is where all the action happens and is the meat of the game. Players can muster between elements in a bid to overcome opponents and claim stages. As such, any stage cleared off by the player will then be overtaken by humans, which can be used as settlements.
But while old moves are returning, the remaster also sees the addition of new ones and the introduction of dodge move. Melee-wise, the player can now act in either upward or downward direction, which is completely new to the remake. Altogether, this repertoire makes the player even more capable in fulfilling the task of vanquishing evil as the Lord of Light.
Trusty ally
Acting as the protagonist’s stalwart ally is an angel who is tasked in managing the landscape. With the power not only to build, but also destroy, said angel is capable of eradicating anything that obstructs the settlement’s progress. Be it large trees or boulders that can be reduced to smithereens using either lightning or earthquake. Alternatively, your partner also wields a dependable bow and arrow that can drive away evil incarnates from the field. Players can also take advantage of certain weaponries in order to protect the area from invading monsters.
ActRaiser Renaissance’s original music comprises of both old and new, both of which composed and enhanced by Yuzo Koshiro.
