It’s been more than two years since its debut but Sky One is preparing to release the second season of A Discovery of Witches.
The fantasy drama based on the All Souls trilogy from author Deborah Harkness will premiere on Jan. 8, 2021 on Sky One in the U.K. The release date has been confirmed with a first look teaser, which was unveiled during the A Discovery of Witches New York Comic-Con panel.
TV Line reported that outside of the U.K., viewers can watch the second season premiere on Jan. 9, 2021 at Sundance Now or Shudder. The second season will consist of 10 episodes.
A new time period and new characters
Stars Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode are back to reprise their characters, Diana and Matthew. The new season opens in London in the Elizabethan period, where Diana is on a search for a teacher who can help harness her powers as a witch. Matthew, on the other hand, is on the search for the Book of Life.
Diana and Matthew, however, need to keep watching their back and continue to cover their tracks as The Congregation is still after them.
A Discovery of Witches season 2 will introduce three new characters, as seen in the teaser. James Purefoy will play Philippe de Clermont and Paul Rhys is Andrew Hubbard. Sheila Hancock is a new witch named Alsop.
Meanwhile, in the present time period, Marcus (Edward Bluemel) and Miriam (Aiysha Shart) are doing all they can to take care of Sophie (Aisling Loftus). Last season revealed Sophie’s pregnancy with her first witch baby.
Witch hunter Ysabeau de Clermont (Lindsay Duncan) finds an ally in Sarah (Alex Kingston) and Emily (Valarie Pettiford). Gerbert (Trevor Eve), Peter (Owen Teale), Satu (Malin Buska) and Domenico (Gregg Chillin), on the other hand, try to figure out what happened to Matthew and Diana.
Season 3 production underway
Amid the trailer’s release, Sky One also confirmed that production for season 3 started in September at the Wolf Studios Wales. Tom Hughes has signed on for the third season as Christopher Marlowe, the English playwright, per Radio Times.

A Discovery of Witches follows a female historian (Diana) who discovers an old manuscript that leads her to a world of magic. She meets a vampire (Matthew) who offers to help her protect this manuscript but they completely fall in love with each other.
Diana also learns of a growing mistrust between vampires and witches that complicates their situation. Against two groups, Diana and Matthew form an alliance and dodge the threats around them to get to the bottom of the secrets detailed in the manuscript.
A Discovery of Witches season 1 is still accessible via subscription at Shudder or Sundance Now.
