A24 unveils ‘The Green Knight’ RPG inspired by David Lowery film

A24 has officially announced The Green Knight fantasy role-playing game, which is directly based on David Lowery’s upcoming fantasy movie The Green Knight.

According to A24’s official website, The Green Knight fantasy RPG comes with A Quest for Honor Starter Set, which already includes the Game Master’s Guide, Map of the Realm, a total of five character sheets, and a 20-sided die.

Along with the announcement, A24 also took the opportunity to release a trailer for the fantasy RPG, which cheekily evokes the 1980s era (in loving tribute to D&D fans everywhere).

Inspired by the movie

It was back in February earlier this year when A24 Films released the official teaser trailer of the movie.

Directed by David Lowery, the epic film features a well-rounded cast that includes Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire, Hotel Mumbai), Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (Tomb Raider), Joel Edgerton (Red Sparrow, Boy Erased), Barry Keoghan, Ralph Ineson, and Sean Harris.

The movie is based on the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (hence the title), with a plot that follows Sir Gawain, played by Patel, who goes on an adventure to find the Green Knight, a colossal green-skinned warrior.

Lowery’s film was supposed to come out last May of this year, but due to the coronavirus crisis, the movie’s release date has since been postponed indefinitely.

In the meantime, A24 has gone ahead and officially announced the existence of The Green Knight fantasy RPG, even though the movie that inspired it is yet to get a new release date.

What to expect from the RPG

The game can be played by four to six people, with each player selecting from five different characters—Knight, Hunter, Noble, Bard, or Sorcerer.

Players get to immerse themselves in Arthurian settings while completing tasks and overcoming obstacles in order to finally confront the feared Green Knight.

As told by Timm Woods, the tabletop’s game master, to io9, the game is heavily influenced by the classic Dungeons & Dragons TTRPG (tabletop RPG).

Other influences cited by Woods include Pendragon, which also touches on Arthurian legend, and Call of Cthulhu, a game that focuses on solving mysteries and delivering psychological scares.

Woods also made it clear that while The Green Knight fantasy RPG is directly patterned after Lowery’s movie, game masters actually have all the freedom in the world to create their own quest-driven storylines, while taking full advantage of the RPG’s game rules and characters.
