In an ironic twist, Activision claims the success of Call of Duty: Mobile will work for Diablo Immortal. The company believes that mobile platforms are good for their IP.
Call of Duty: Mobile is a downright success at the moment. The game is starting to stomp off its competitors, including PUBG Mobile and Fortnite. The company is looking towards keeping its current mobile strategy with their next titles.
Activision Blizzard happy for CoDM financial success
In a recent quarterly financial call, Activision Blizzard CFO Dennis Durkin lauds the success of CoD Mobile. The game, which came out October last year, is paying dividends for the company.
Last June 2020, reports about the mobile game back Activision’s optimism about its future. Details show that CoD Mobile now has over 250 million downloads in less than a year. The title also generated as much as $327 million in microtransactions, mostly from Asia.
“There’s a lot more to come on mobile too. CoD Mobile is off to a really great start, but we’re just scratching the surface of what that franchise can be on mobile, and then integrating the experiences across multiple platforms, we know is just an incredible opportunity for the franchise,” said Durkin in reply to a question. The query asked for the impact of CoD Mobile on Diablo Immortal.
“But to the early successes [of Call of Duty: Mobile], they do represent incredible proof points as to your question of how the franchise strategy is really working. And it certainly applies to a lot of other franchises that we have.”
Activision looking for similar success with Diablo Immortal
Diablo Immortal is yet to launch. The potential for the same audience who love Call of Duty: Mobile to enjoy Diablo Immortal is quite low. Even then, Durkin is still confident that the experience will translate well.
“We see that our current players really want more ways to engage with their favorite IP, be it through mobile or other platforms and that offering authentic and really deep experiences on new platforms can drive much much higher engagement,” says the Activision Blizzard CFO. “And this quarter’s results really shows that.”
Activision notes that Blizzard is looking towards expanding its internal testing. The team is aiming for a company-wide playtest in the coming weeks. Even then, there’s no release date as of yet.
More Diablo Immortal news will likely come out on the upcoming Blizzcon next year. With Call of Duty: Mobile being a success, Activision believes people will respond well to Immortal.
