Actor Thomas Jefferson Byrd shot dead in Atlanta

Thomas Jefferson Byrd was killed the past weekend. He passed away in Atlanta, and his death is being investigated as a crime.

As per CNN News, on Oct. 3, police officers were called at around 1:45 a.m. and they were dispatched to 2259 Belvedere Ave. in Atlanta.

The incident – Byrd’s cause of death

They were responding to a call about an injured person who turned out to be the actor Thomas Jefferson Byrd.

Based on the report, the emergency medical services that were also dispatched to the scene pronounced him dead. When they checked him out, they found multiple gunshot wounds in his back.

He was 70, and with his passing, director Spike Lee paid tribute to Thomas Jefferson Byrd via social media. The actor appeared in many of Lee’s movies, so he knows the actor very well.

“Our Brother Thomas Jefferson Byrd As Da Pimp ‘SWEETNESS’ of Coney Island In He Got Game,” Lee wrote on Instagram as a caption on the photo of Byrd that he posted. “May brother Byrd be flying through those heavenly pearly gates. AMEN”

Detectives in the homicide unit are currently investigating to know what exactly happened to Byrd.

The Atlanta Police Department told Variety that the available information at this time is just preliminary in nature. This means that things could still change as the investigation progresses, and new info or evidence is found.

No further details are available right now. The police also declined to speak more about the shooting incident since they are still investigating.

Facts about Thomas Jefferson Byrd

The actor was in a number of Spike Lee’s movies, and some of them are Red Hook Summer, Clockers, Bamboozled, Get on the Bus, Chi-Raq, Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, and Girl 6.

It was added that he also appeared in minor roles in Jamie Foxx’s Ray Charles’ biopic titled Ray and Antoine Fuqua’s Brooklyn’s Finest. He was also starring in a recurring role in Law & Order: Criminal Intent and the 1993 sitcom Living Single.

Apart from Spike Lee’s films, Thomas Jefferson Byrd also worked on as a stage actor. He was even a nominee at the Tony Award for the Broadway revival of August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom in 2003.

Finally, Thomas Jefferson Byrd’s last works include an episode in Tracy Morgan’s The Last O.G. and the 2020 drama movie about civil war called Freedom’s Path.
