Alec Baldwin accidentally killed Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, and the shooting incident could, reportedly, result in criminal charges.
New Mexico’s first district attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies revealed that they have not ruled out anything regarding the shooting incident involving Alec Baldwin. Still, she assured that the ongoing investigation also aims to determine who loaded the ammunition into the gun Baldwin used.
The department released a new warrant on Tuesday, obtained by Fox News, noting they found several types of bullets on Rust set. They will, reportedly, find out what kinds of those bullets were.
During their onsite investigation, the authorities found ammunition and several firearms on the set. They did not detail what kind of bullets they found.
Since the incident happened, many referred to Baldwin’s firearm as a prop gun. However, Carmack-Altwies has an issue with the term. Per the attorney, the set used an antique-era and legit gun.
The detectives continued interviewing all people present on the set at the time of the shooting incident. With that, Carmack-Altwies said that they would need weeks or months before finally focusing on charging.
“It’s probably weeks, if not months, of follow-up investigation that we’re going to need to get to the point of charging,” she went on.
Her statement resonated with what the Santa Fe Medical Examiner & Coroner office said, estimating that Hutchins’ autopsy could take six to 10 weeks or more.
Attorney learned critical information about the Rust shooting incident
Amid the ongoing investigation, Carmack-Altwies reportedly learned the reports that crew members, allegedly, used the weapons for leisure shooting hours before Baldwin started filming. She clarified that the reports remain unconfirmed, and that they need more time to look into the matter.
“We have complex cases all the time,” she said. “But this kind of complex case, with these kinds of prominent people, no.”
As she warned that criminal charges are already on the table, she did not mention who would be responsible for Hutchin’s death.
According to criminal defense lawyer Mark Geragos, Baldwin could be the recipient of the charges since he is the producer of Rust. He also revealed that the investigators might also be looking at whether the team cut costs and shaved money without realizing it could end up like the most recent incident.
He also said he would be shocked if there was not an involuntary manslaughter charge in the case, regardless of what the findings were.
