A month after its announcement, Among Us 2 seems to be dead in the water. Innersloth notes they opted to keep working on their current hit title. The huge space mystery game still has much potential to it.
In an announcement, the Among Us studio has already detailed how problematic its codebase is. The design of the game is not conducive to growth. It’s hard to use and antiquated, which makes a better sequel title sensible.
“The main reason we are shooting for a sequel is because the codebase of Among Us 1 is so outdated and not built to support adding so much new content,” says the post. “However, seeing how many people are enjoying Among Us 1 really makes us want to be able to support the game and take it to the next level.”
“We have decided to cancel Among Us 2 and instead put all our focus into improving Among Us 1. All of the content we had planned for Among Us 2 will instead go into Among Us 1. This is probably the more difficult choice because it means going deep into the core code of the game and reworking several parts of it.”
Innersloth will likely stay busy over the next few months. Their claims of Among Us having antiquated codebase is true. Some remnants of it are still in the final game, and players can still access them.
For example, players can access Halloween 2019 hats using a simple date change. Once players revert to the current date, they can still keep the items with them. These weird artifacts are likely due to bad coding.
The game’s servers are also having a hard time handling the massive amount of players. Asia and Europe servers, for example, take a good few tries before players can connect. Even when they join, they can have themselves disconnected.
Among Us 2 would solve these problems, but it will divide the player base. Innersloth has a simple, likable product that people love. The best they can do now is push new updates, paid DLC, and microtransactions.
So far, the devs have the same idea. They are looking to improve their servers and add some accessibility options like colorblind support. Innersloth is also going to add a friend system, personal accounts, and new stages.
While Among Us 2 is not coming anymore, fans can keep playing the game. It’s fun and the devs are looking to make it better.
