Apple was the world’s largest smartphone maker in Q4 2020

It should come as no surprise that Apple outperformed Samsung as the world’s largest smartphone maker in the fourth quarter of 2020.

Newmarket data by Gartner revealed that Apple was the largest smartphone maker in Q4 of last year. What’s interesting is that the company never achieved this feat from 2016 until 2020.

Samsung enjoyed this title for a while, but now it seems like everything is going in favor of the iPhone maker.

Apple: Constantly growing and increasing

The data from Gartner showed that Apple sold 80 million units of new iPhones. The main reason is also the introduction of 5G-enabled models. The extra-added features and the support of 5G helped the buyers to decide to choose the iPhone 12 series.

Here’s what Gartner’s Senior Research Director said, based on his market data:

“Even as consumers remained cautious in their spending and held off on some discretionary purchases, 5G smartphones and pro-camera features encouraged some end users to purchase new smartphones or upgrade their current smartphones in the quarter.”

When compared to 2019, Apple sold ten million more iPhones last year. Its global market share also increased by almost 15 percent. On the other hand, rival Samsung witnessed a dip of 11.8 percent. In simple words, it sold eight million fewer units of its smartphones, as per the market data.

Moreover, Apple’s lead analyst at Gartner, Annette Zimmerman, said that the growth yielded the company an “upgrade super-cycle.”

In this year itself, last month, CEO Tim Cook revealed that 2021’s Q1 proved to be huge for the company. Because the California tech giant saw the largest number of iPhone upgrades in January, along with that, the iPhone alone resulted in a revenue of more than $65 billion in the first quarter.

What’s next from the company?

Meanwhile, the most valuable tech entity is currently preparing for its next surprise package in the new year. Of course, it will include many new product announcements.

An event is likely to happen soon, probably by March-end. However, there’s no official word on this as of now. Talking about its objective, then it might reveal the much-anticipated AirTags and AirPods Studio headphones.

Moving further, then there is the WWDC event in June. The highlight of it will be the upcoming iOS software version. It’s rumored to be even better than iOS 14, especially in terms of privacy and customizations.

Apple will then proceed with its main reveals of the year, such as the next Watch line-up and the iPhone 13. The latter has become a center of many discussions and speculations since last year. While some reports claim that it will have a 120Hz display, others say it to be completely portless.
