iOS 13.5 beta 3 makes iPhone and iPad users skip Face ID. Apple’s latest update automatically skips the process upon detecting that the user is wearing a facemask.
Apple today rolled out its third version of the iOS 13.5 beta. The tech giant’s beta release is only available for developers and still awaits the official public launch.
Skipping Face ID
Apple made its iOS 13.5 relevant for the COVID 19 pandemic. The company added a tweak that automatically skips the Face ID. The tweak works once the beta updated iPhone or iPad detects that the user is wearing a face mask. The device will head directly to the next verification process.
The iOS 13.5 beta 3 updated devices will direct the users wearing a face mask to the passcode screen. Face ID will continue to screen normally once the device detected no face mask on.
Using Face ID with a facemask on
For some who would still want their Face ID to function even with their face mask on, Apple made it possible as well. Training the Face ID to recognize the iPhone or iPad user even with a face mask on takes a few simple steps.
The Face ID training takes using the primary Face ID and redoing the alternate appearance with the same subject wearing a mask. From iPhone or iPad devices, select settings, Face ID and Passcode and select Alternate Appearance.
With the front device camera set up the alternate appearance and fold the mask in half holding it until the phone says face obstructed. To complete the Face ID training, move the mask slowly away from the center of the face.
The instruction that tells the user to move the head slowly to complete the circle signals the saving of the captured image’s success. During the Face ID training process, avoid covering the nose and covering face too much as it will result in an error.
The confirmation saying that the Face ID is set up means the Face ID training succeeded. The user may then put the mask on and check if it will unlock the device. However, Face ID training did not work consistently during the test. Apple also reminded iPhone and iPad users that Face ID works with eyes, nose, and mouth visible.
More features from iOS beta 13.5
Aside from the Face ID, another significant change for iOS 13.5 beta 3 is the notification for Apple and Google’s COVID-19 contact tracing API for exposure. The feature will enable an app to notify the user of the possibility of being exposed to the coronavirus.
The app can be activated through the iOS 13.4 beta 3 updated device settings. The user simply needs to turn the enabling exposure notifications on.
