‘Astro’s Playroom’ helped developed the DualSense controllers

The PlayStation 5 won’t have a huge playlist at launch, but what it does have to offer in games are already great. One of those titles launching with the console is Astro’s Playground, which helps players fully utilize the capabilities of the DualSense controllers.

Astro’s Playroom is a free game that comes bundled with every copy of the PlayStation 5. It’s not just a simple platformer or a free game. It instead helps players discover the capabilities of the DualSense controllers. In fact, the game helped the PlayStation 5 developers create more features for the controllers.

Pushing the limits

In an interview with Famitsu (as translated by Videogames Chronicle), Japan Studio boss Nicolas Doucet shared how the platformer was developed alongside the controllers. Doucet says that the game followed a similar development process with the DualShock 4 and Project Morpheus, which was later called PlayStation VR.

“After considering the experience of the game, we thought about what parts should be further improved and what direction should be taken,” he added.

As they were developing the game, they sent feedback to the team developing the DualSense. This was the process fo years. Doucet adds that the dynamic development process could very well help expound the future of gameplay.

The DualSense

Later on, he added that the DualSense’s shape had been changed considerably throughout the development phase. However, revolutionary features like the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers were already planned from the start.

Astro’s Playroom is apparently a platforming experience that could last up to five hours long. The game is also an ode to the history of the PlayStation as there will be a ton of segments and surprises dedicated to the previous consoles as well as the first ones.

What players should be looking forward to is the game’s capability to showcase all that the controllers have to offer. As per some developers of PlayStation 5 games, the DualSense really is a marvel. For instance, the triggers will lock in place when a player’s gun jams in Deathloop. Beyond that, developers have shared that the controllers make for a more immersive experience.

Having a tech showcase game like Astro’s Playroom is a great idea. Not only will the game help players explore what the PlayStation 5 and the DualSense controllers are capable of, but it can also give players hours of fun. Fans should expect to see more of this game within the coming weeks.
