Despite its already established power amongst the most beefed up in terms of performance, this hidden feature of the ROG Phone 3 has caught everyone by surprise.
The ASUS ROG Phone 3 may have just been released to the wild a few days ago, but this doesn’t stop the new gaming powerhouse from still killing the competition.
A curious discovery
A discovery has been made, courtesy of XDA-Developers’ editor-in-chief Mishaal Rahman, which revealed that the ROG Phone 3 has a hidden 160Hz refresh rate mode. This is on top of the phone’s advertised 144Hz mode, which is already at the helm in today’s standards.
Not only did Rahman find it, but he also discovered a way to activate the said display mode. According to his published post, he found references that are indicative of a higher refresh mode via the Settings app. He then unearthed a debug command, which can be used to bring out the 160Hz mode in the process.
ROG Phone 3: Here’s how to use the higher display refresh rate
If you opt to go with this feature, one must only set up the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) on your PC. Next, run the following command through a command prompt or terminal window: adb shell setprop debug.vendor.asus.fps.eng 1
Once the command is entered, this is the time that the phone needs to get rebooted. When the phone is back up, you can now freely toggle the 160Hz display mode by accessing Settings > Display > Refresh Rate or via the Refresh Rate Quick Setting tile.
Of course, this question is necessitated: Is this safe for the phone’s front panel?
As per Rahman, he doesn’t think that ASUS would have tested this higher refresh rate if it’s unsafe for the device’s panel to employ a much higher refresh rate. Rahman added that he’s also been running his ROG Phone 3 smartphone at 160Hz mode for several days already, and not any stability issues were noted.
At the time of its release, the ASUS ROG Phone 3 features a 6.59-inch AMOLED screen, with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,340 pixels. It boasts a high 144Hz refresh rate and 650 nits of maximum brightness. The phone’s screen is also HDR10+-compliant and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6.
The ASUS ROG Phone 3 is also powered by Qualcomm’s latest flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 865+. It is noted for being one of the pioneers of the new SoC.
