Hackers who attacked CD Projekt Red a few days ago claim to have sold the source code of its games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Witcher 3.
According to Games Industry, the CD Projekt Red source code stolen by hackers has reportedly been sold. The developer’s affected properties include big titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Witcher 3. Reports say that ransom attackers took an external offer after CDPR denied their conditions.
Cyberpunk 2077 and other games affected
Cyberintelligence firm Kela recently shared several pictures from forums where hackers were selling the source code. They were related to the big CD Projekt Red games like Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. As per the images, the group reportedly accepted one offer and auctioned the code and other compromised data.
The post on the forum stated that the auction is now closed.
“An offer was received outside the forum that satisfied us. With the conditions of further non-distribution, in this regard, they were forced to withdraw the lot from sale [sic].”
Previous reports also claimed that the complete source code for Cyberpunk 2077, Thronebreaker, and The Witcher 3 were sold. It also included an unreleased, ray-tracing version of the latter.
After hacking the developer, the ransom attacking group demanded around $1 million. The minimum offer increase was $500,000. At the same time, the other option was $7 million.
However, still, there’s no confirmation regarding how much money they made eventually.
Speaking about the entire matter then, earlier this week, CDPR shared the news of a cyber attack. It announced that an “unidentified actor” stole its games’ source code and several internal documents.
The hackers gave a deadline of 48 hours to make contact regarding purchasing the stolen data back from them. But the developer, in its statement, said that it would “not give in to the demands nor negotiate with the actor, being aware that this may eventually lead to the release of the compromised data.”
It also ensured the players that their data was safe and not compromised.
Polish developer facing a tough challenge
It’s a difficult phase for the developer behind some of the vast “AAA” titles. But it seems like it has been going on since the last year itself. 2020 was all about the overdrive controversy of Cyberpunk 2077. And it was a dire situation because all the gamers and fans were criticizing CDPR for constantly missing the release date.
When it finally managed an eventual launch in December, the situation became even worse. It admitted that it didn’t check the game’s performance on all the consoles. As a result, many players complained against this on social media. Moreover, they also got refunds following poor gameplay on PlayStations and other consoles.
Its been more than two months now since Cyberpunk 2077 came out, and somehow the scenario is improving. But the latest case of the cyberattack is once again causing a threat. Despite the developer’s assurance, people might feel vulnerable about their data on its games.
