During the Day of the Devs showcase, Thomas Happ’s Axiom Verge 2 is, reportedly, going next-gen. It’s heading to PS4 and PS5 later this year, with the game changing the rules for the genre.
Among its changes is the ability to complete the game without fighting bosses. This move creates a fresh but weird new gameplay within this oft-beloved genre.
Backing up the announcement, Happ wrote a blog post on the official Playstation website. He notes that he feels like he owes Sony a favor for showcasing his title at E3 2014.
“So as I was working on Axiom Verge 2, I felt I owed it both to Sony and all of the earliest fans of Axiom Verge to bring it to PS4 and PS5,” said Happ. “I can’t imagine launching any other way.
“I am excited to confirm here and now that the PS4 version will be available on day one. I am going to try my best to get the PS5 version ready for launch, but that might take a bit longer since I really want to take advantage of that in-game hints system!”
Happ is also pushing to change a few things about his 2D pixel-art style Metroidvania platformer. He’s finding ways to distinguish the game as much as he can.
Axiom Verge 2 receive a short delay recently, but according to its dev, it’s close to finishing. Happ also noted that he talked to many players of the game, only to learn that many get stuck on the boss stages.
“I’ve talked to many people who enjoyed exploring the world of Axiom Verge, only to get stuck at a boss they just couldn’t get past. And that ended the game experience for them,” said Happ in the reveal.
“For players out there who love a good boss fight, they’re there for you, and you’ll be rewarded for your efforts. But if you prefer to run right past them and keep exploring, that’s a completely valid way of experiencing Axiom Verge 2.”
AV2 will also skip the traditional difficulty mechanics of easy/normal/hard. Instead, the game will use a type of dynamic difficulty system. The game’s difficulty will adjust depending on how much damage players deal and how much players take.
Axiom Verge 2 does not have a release date yet, but listed to come out “later this summer.”
