The CW’s most recent superhero series Batwoman vowed that Ruby Rose’s character Kate Kane wouldn’t be killed off and would remain an integral part of the story.
American television network The CW’s latest DC comics-based TV series Batwoman hit a bit of a snag recently. Its lead actress Ruby Rose, who played the show’s main character Kate Kane and her alter ego Batwoman, opted not to return for the show’s second season.
With the fate of the protagonist hanging in the balance, it was announced that the show would be introducing a different Batwoman instead of recasting Ruby Rose’s character, which leads some fans to believe that Kate Kane would likely meet her demise.
The series’ lead producer Caroline Dries cleared the air in a recent statement, reassuring fans that the character would not be killed off. Furthermore, the veteran writer added that Kane’s abrupt disappearance would be part of season 2’s plot.

Caroline Dries’ passionate statement
Dries posted a statement on Twitter on behalf of the show and herself, where she admitted that Kate Kane—one of the few openly gay superheroes in existence—was the main reason for her wanting to be part of the Batwoman series.
Being a lesbian herself, the showrunner showed her love for Kane and clarified that the character would never be erased from the show. She then segued into Kane’s disappearance being one of the mysteries to be tackled next season.
Dries capped off the personal statement by letting fans know that LGBTQ+ justice is, and always will be, one of the show’s core values. Check out the full statement below.

The next Batwoman
According to a recent report by Entertainment Weekly, the next person to don Batwoman’s cowl will be a character by the name of Ryan Wilder.
Producers are still reportedly holding auditions for the role, with a casting call put up on Reddit looking for an LGBTQ actress to lead the show. The alleged casting notice described the upcoming protagonist as “likable, messy, a little goofy, and untamed.”
The Reddit post also gave some background information on Ryan Wilder’s character, explaining how she used to be a drug-runner who’s changed her ways and is now living out of her van. Similar to Kate Kane, Wilder is also an open lesbian.

News of the new main character was met with mixed reviews, as some fans questioned the casting of a woman of color to play a homeless ex-junkie, while Kate Kane’s Batwoman was a wealthy Caucasian heiress.
