Benedict Cumberbatch confirms ‘Doctor Strange 2’ starts filming in the near future

The sequel for Marvel’s Doctor Strange will soon start filming. Lead star Benedict Cumberbatch shares excitement on the upcoming Doctor Strange 2.

Doctor Strange 2, fittingly called Doctor Strange in Multiverse Madness, is a highly anticipated sequel from the original 2016 movie. Notably, it is just one of the movies affected by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The production confirmed to film early this year, but COVID-19 interrupted the project. The original release date of the movie is in November next year. With the current pandemic, Disney moved the release date to 2022.

After the first movie debuted in 2016, Doctor Strange appeared on MCU installments like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Indeed, Cumberbatch’s character has become more popular for Disney and Marvel followers.

Benedict Cumberbatch shares details on “Doctor Strange 2”

Talking to WatchTime India, Cumberbatch revealed that his current project is the pre-production of Doctor Strange sequel. He said:

“We will start filming in late October or early November.”

For this reason, concrete details about the sequel will soon surface. Aside from the storyline, information about the other cast members will also come out soon.

Although nothing yet is definite, the film will feature the appearance of Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch. Moreover, Doctor Strange 2 will have a direct connection with Disney’s WandaVision. Reportedly, the WandaVision series will arrive on Disney this year.

On a side note, Cumberbatch will reunite with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Benedict Wong in the movie sequel. Subsequently, Scott Derrickson, who directed the first Doctor Strange, is supposed to direct the sequel. However, he exited the project in January this year. The film is now in the hands of its new director, Sam Raimi, who will work with Michael Waldron. Interestingly, Waldron is writing the script for the upcoming Disney series, Loki.

Ms. America might join the cast

There is also talks about adding the teenage character, America Chavez, in the Multiverse Madness. Screenrant reports that Marvel Studios is now casting a 12-15-year-old Puerto Rican girl to carry the role. Ms. America is a character from an alternate dimension in Marvel Comics. Furthermore, she is a bisexual Latin hero who will, reportedly, take the supporting lead role in the sequel.  If this is true, Ms. America’s entrance to Doctor Strange 2 is just the beginning of other roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

However, Marvel’s Studios has not released the full details on the casting. Moreover, it might take a while since the sequel is still in its pre-production.

“Doctor Strange 2” release date

As of writing, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will arrive on March 25, 2022.
