There’s a lot of choices when it comes to controllers for the Nintendo Switch and here we take a look at what options are available for you today.
The best feature of the Nintendo Switch is its ability to be played docked or handheld. The need for a dedicated controller is felt when playing docked.
There are plenty of options when choosing the best Nintendo Switch controller and it can get overwhelming.
It may sound cliche, but the best Nintendo Switch controller is still the Joy-Cons included in the set.
However, the controller may feel flimsy at times. Nintendo offers the “Pro Controller” and it is the best option in the market hands down but it can be too pricey at US$70 (AUS$109).
There are third party controllers available in the market that are affordable. These controllers work the same as the Pro-Con with a few major difference such as the lack of an NFC. The build quality might be also be compromised in these controllers.
For someone looking for a Pro Controller alternative or a beater controller, third-party options are a good buy. Here are the best Nintendo Switch controllers available today that are bang-for-the-buck.
1. Nyko Wireless Core Controller
The Nyko Wireless Core Controller is a great alternative for the Nintendo Pro Controller. It has an ergonomic shape that feels very comfortable for long hours of gaming.
For just US$29.99, this controller has the same functionality as the original one but with an added feature. Nyko included a Turbo function on this controller.
This allows the player to register quick button presses in just a single click. This feature is handy when playing button smashing arcade games.
Nyko includes a USB-C charging cable in the package. It is rated to last up to 20 hours of playtime, which means once or twice a week of charging would suffice.
If the price tag is still steep, a wired version is available at a lower price.
2. Hori Split Pad Pro
The Hori Split Pad Pro is not a direct replacement to the Pro Controller. It is a Joy-Con alternative when playing the Switch in handheld mode.
The shape and size of the Joy-Cons are not ergonomic and might get a bit uncomfortable to hold after a while. The Hori Split Pad Pro aims to provide a comfortable handheld gaming experience without breaking the bank.
Hori sells the Split Pad Pro for $50. It is a little bit steep for something that can only be used one way. But for those who use the Switch in handheld mode or travel a lot, this is a great buy.
3. 8Bitdo SN30 Pro Plus
Nintendo offers an online subscription to be able to play classic Nintendo games such as Super Mario World. This controller completes the nostalgia with its old school look.
The 8Bitdo SN30 Pro Plus has a very extensive button mapping and macro customization. There are also a lot of features added such as custom rumble, and the adjustable dead zone for the analog sticks.
It runs on either the built-in battery or by two removable AA batteries. This is a huge plus both for home use or for travel. Charge it at home while not in use. When gaming outside and the controller dies, just pop in another set of batteries from the convenience store.
Every controller has its pros and cons and the SN30 is not exempted. This controller requires a PC for button mapping. It is not a huge downside but it would have been better if it was plug and play.
The 8Bitdo SN30 Pro Plus retails for $50 in Amazon.
4. PDP Faceoff Deluxe+ Controller
This one is another alternative to the Pro-Con. The PDP Faceoff Deluxe+ Controller is another budget option in case the Nyko Wireless Core Controller is not available. The difference is the Faceoff Deluxe+ comes wired.
For $25, it exceeds expectations and performs really well. The grip feels good and the buttons do not feel mushy. The buttons are remappable as well, which is great for some games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild. However, the buttons can be mapped on a time and it is tiresome if there are multiple games available to play.
There are a lot of color options for this controller. It comes in red, purple, black, and blue. Perfect for those who color coordinate their Switch peripherals.
Those who prefer gaming in silence will love the headphone jack at the bottom of the controller. This allows students who love to play while inside a dorm, or for families who prefer playing quietly.
This controller is officially licensed by Nintendo. It adds confidence that it is one of the best Nintendo Switch controllers available today.
