In an interview with Queen lead guitarist Brian May, he revealed that it may be difficult to come up with a Bohemian Rhapsody 2.
The 72-year old musician currently serves as a consultant of the movie together with drummer Roger Taylor so he knows very well the future of the biopic.
Hardcore fans thought though that the biographical drama was already the end of the story. After all, the movie ended with lead singer Freddie Mercury’s death in 1991.
But it turns out that the band and the producers are exploring the idea of a sequel. It’s no surprise though since the music biopic won four Academy Awards and earned $900 million worldwide.
With such success, a part two is really something that they are looking into. However, it seems like there has been a change of heart lately.
According to May, they talked about making a Bohemian Rhapsody 2. “Don’t think we didn’t think about it. We’ve talked,” he said.
However, he admitted that the idea of unfolding more stories from the band’s journey through the years just doesn’t seem right at the moment. In his words, “Basically we think not, at the moment.”
He did not completely shut down the idea though. He said that things could still change but he thinks it would be difficult.
A sequel to the movie will most likely cover the events that happened during Mercury’s final years. He left the limelight to battle HIV privately. Before he died, he recorded three more Queen albums including “The Miracle” and “Innuendo.”
The story within the years before Mercury’s death is something that fans are looking forward to knowing. But for May, he believes that it’s just not the most “uplifting” thing to do.
“I’m not saying it’s impossible because there is a great story there, but we don’t feel that’s the story we want to tell at the moment,” said May.
There are still other stories to tell about Queen. The 2018 movie did not include Mercury’s childhood years. Some periods in the band’s career have not been told as well.
So should filmmakers decide to pick up the title for a sequel, there are still many plots to explore. May is firm though about his thoughts on a part two. He mentioned that they even simplified the movie to make it watchable.
“I think we should look somewhere else. There are other ideas that we had, but I don’t think a sequel will happen. But we have looked at it pretty seriously,” he said.
