Bomb Rush Cyberfunk has been announced today and it has Jet Set Radio vibes to it, so much so that everyone is calling it a spiritual successor.
Indie dev Team Reptile released a new trailer for Bomb Rush Cyberfunk today. Its Steam page also went up, confirming a potential 2022 release. So far, the game gets a lot of its inspiration from the Sega Dreamcast classic.
Cyberfunk will let players grind their way around a funk city
Jet Set Radio was ahead of its time when it comes to its gameplay and graphics. Its cityfunk aesthetic was some of the best of its era, defining what few classics the Dreamcast had. The game’s only downfall was being on the wrong console.
So far, Cyberfunk has the style and graphics down to a T, complete with the funk art motown shades. The art style is eerily similar, from the blocky faux-retro aesthetic reminiscent of the original game. Even then, the similarities end with aesthetics.
The trailer shows a few new characters, with gameplay still reminiscent of Jet Set. Players dash, skate, and grind their way around town, putting graffiti tags all over. This time, however, it’s more than simple skates.
The cyberpunk aesthetics gives characters some rocket skates and cool jet packs. Players can move through rails, wallrun through billboards, and much more.
The music is from Hideki Naganuma, the original composer for the original JSR and Jet Set Radio Future.
New JSR successor hypes audience
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is as Jet Set Radio as it gets. Team Reptile, though a relatively unknown team, are not newbies in the business. They already developed other indie titles before, including Lethal League, Lethal League Blaze, and Megabyte Punch.

So far, everyone’s hyped about this up-and-coming mega-indie title. Its original teaser trailer came out in 2020, but some delays pushed the game to a 2021 full announcement.
“Team Reptile brings you Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, 1 second per second of highly advanced funkstyle,” says the game’s description. “In a world from the mind of Dion Koster, where self-styled crews are equipped with personal boostpacks, new heights of graffiti are reached.
“Start your own cypher and dance, paint, trick, face off with the cops and stake your claim to the extrusions and cavities of a sprawling metropolis in an alternate future set to the musical brainwaves of Hideki Naganuma.”
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is coming to PC in 2022. There is no information so far if the game will come into additional platforms. More details will come out within the upcoming months.
