Boston Celtics, one versatile big man away from Finals

Share

The Boston Celtics are just one versatile big man away from determining a long and dominating future in the Eastern Conference.

The Boston Celtics gave their fans a strong performance in their NBA bubble run. Unfortunately, it was cut short when they had to face the Miami Heat in the ECF. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown both pushed their games even further this season.

Kemba Walker, on the other hand, still wants more time to play with the team. Meanwhile, Gordon Hayward will look to return with the Cs after sorting his injury bug this offseason. The Boston Celtics team is deep with talent. However, their big men need to be upgraded. Daniel Theis and Enes Kanter are quality players, but they aren’t what the team needs.

Below are three players from the free agency that the Celtics can get.

The Boston Celtics can gamble on DeMarcus Cousins

The Celtics need a dominating big man that can handle the paint without getting into foul trouble. The first task was done by Theis beautifully. However, he fouled out several times throughout the Playoffs.

The name in free agency that can fit the part is DeMarcus Cousins. He hasn’t been himself since his Achilles injury when he was in the Pelicans. Nevertheless, he’s still a quality big man that can easily spread the floor and handle the ball quite well. If the Celtics roll the dice on Cousins, they can either win big or small.

If they play their cards properly, they can catapult their way into contending against the Miami Heat with Cousins going head-to-head with Bam Adebayo.

Big man combo of Dwight Howard and Javale McGee

The Celtics can also explore acquiring Dwight Howard and Javale McGee from free agency. Both of these veteran big men proved to be still on top of their games based on their Playoffs outing so far. As such, they can still be serviceable big men that the Celtics can take advantage of.

Also, Howard and McGee have spent some quality time together in a Lakers uniform. There is also no denying that they can run the floor with the athletic wings under the Brad Stevens system.

Tristan Thompson has evolved his game

The big man that the Celtics need is a strong and versatile player. Spreading the floor is a big plus. As such, Tristan Thompson may have evolved his game just to fit the requirements of the Cs.

Thompson, aside from his defensive prowess, has added a 3-point shot to his arsenal. If he can consistently sink these shots, the Celtics should take a good look at him. Thompson is also one of the most durable players in the league, and that could play well to the likings of Danny Ainge and Brad Stevens.
