At the 2021 MTV VMAs, BTS won three of the seven trophies for which they were nominated.
On Sunday, the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards, often known as the VMAs debuted, on September 12 at 8 p.m. ET. This is the same day as BTS’ leader Kim Namjoon’s birthday, giving the boyband even more cause to rejoice.
BTS took up three prizes during the event, including Song of the Summer for their smash song Butter, Group of the Year, and K-pop Music Video for their hit single Butter.
The inaugural Song of Summer award was handed out in 2013, and the boy band One Direction took home the prize for Best Song Ever. The category is a fan-voted category on social media, with voters determining the Song of Summer.
With their song How You Like That, Blackpink won Song of Summer in the year 2020. This is the first time BTS has been nominated in this category, including many other well-known songs. BTS has already won nine MTV Video Music Awards since its first nomination three years ago.
BTS matched with big names
Camila Cabello’s Don’t Go Yet, DJ Khaled’s Every Chance I Get, Doja Cat’s Need to Know, Billie Eilish’s Happier Than Ever, Giveon’s Heartbreak Anniversary, The Kid Laroi’s Stay, Lil Nas X’s Industry Baby, Lizzo’s ft. Jack Harlow, Dua Lipa’s Levitating, Jack Harlow’s Rumors Thot Shit by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, Summer of Love by Shawn Mendes and Tainy, and Normani’s Wild Side feat. Cardi B, Olivia Rodrigo’s Good 4 U, and Ed Sheeran’s Bad Habits were this year’s Song of Summer nominations. Because this is a fan-voted category, ARMYs votes helped BTS win for the third time today.
The MTV Video Music Awards 2021 were held in front of a live audience at Barclays Center in New York City on September 12, 2021. The 40th edition of the awards presentation was broadcast live on CTV at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
An unexpected win for the fans
Fans assumed that BTS would not win the MTV VMAs Song of Summer award since they had previously been rejected from other prominent categories like Song of the Year, which Olivia Rodrigo won, and Best Pop, which Justin Bieber won.

Despite their worldwide domination, BTS was not nominated for major awards such as Artist of the Year, while Harry Styles won Choreography of the Year for Treat People With Kindness, a song with very little dancing.
Overwhelmed by the show’s dismal outcomes, supporters began tweeting about how BTS had been denied the prizes they deserved. Soon later, fans were stunned to see that BTS had won Song of Summer at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards.
For the second year in a row, Butter has been named the Summer Song. Billboard released its Song of Summer list for 2021 on September 8, and Butter was ranked number one.
