‘Call of Duty 2020’ will reportedly be set in the ‘Black Ops’ universe

Following the phenomenal release and critical reception for Modern Warfare, Activision’s latest yearly entry into the Call of Duty series, a lot of attention is now shifting towards the future.

May 2020 is right around the corner, with the said month the usual period when the publisher announces a new Call of Duty title. As the announcement draws near, so do the speculations of course, and there’s already a significant buzz as to what will succeed the highly successful reboot that is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Reports as early as last year points to a possible Black Ops title, but there have also been talks that it’s going to be a Modern Warfare sequel. The latter seems more unlikely, however, as it has been confirmed that Treyarch will be developing the 2020 iteration of Call of Duty; the developer is best known for their work on the Black Ops sub-series.

Not quite Black Ops

That said, the upcoming title may not actually be Black Ops, either. In a video by YouTube channel TheGamingRevolution, it’s reported that while the upcoming Call of Duty title will touch on the Black Ops in-game universe in some ways, it will not carry the Black Ops subtitle, rather opting for a possible new one that will likely take the series in a new yet familiar direction.

The video goes on to state that the game will encompass the era during the Cold War, as well as possibly touching on the Vietnam War, making it quite near the timeline the original Black Ops was set in. It’s also still up for speculation if this will be a reboot of Black Ops, in the same vein as 2019’s Modern Warfare. In the last few months, most of the speculative rumors and news points to something like the former, but TheGamingRevolution video states that a lot has changed during the game’s development in the same timeline.

One final Call of Duty title for this console generation

While there are still a lot of things unknown about this year’s Call of Duty, we do know that it is expected to be a cross-generational title for this era, set to be available for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One family of consoles as well as the upcoming PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is now available to play on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The game’s standalone free-to-play battle royale, Call of Duty: Warzone, can also be played across all three platforms.
