‘Call of Duty Vanguard’ is getting its comic book launch partnering with Marvel.
Activision Publishing is partnering with Marvel Comics to release a new comic book based on Call of Duty: Vanguard based on the long-running video game series.
The story follows several members of a group created by the United States government during the Cold War to combat Russia’s experimental weapons program, which is now out for revenge. It tells an original story that dives into an undead version of Moscow and explores what happens when this new enemy infects some of our most fearsome weapons systems.
What will the comic series consist of?
The series will release digitally in three installments, with the first issue out now. Each case will be priced at $3.99. It is written by Dan Abnett (Guardians of the Galaxy), illustrated by Brian Level (Captain America), and colored by Sunny Gho (Star Wars).
The upcoming Call of Duty: Vanguard comic series is set in the modern era, similar to Call of Duty®: Black Ops III, featuring appearances from several characters from the previous Call of Duty® titles in addition to new ones that have yet to be announced.
“We’re always looking for new ways to expand gaming fans’ entertainment horizons,” said Mark Blecher, Senior Vice President of Global Brand Development and Marketing at Activision Publishing. “I think fans are going to be excited by this effort to bring the Call of Duty universe into the world of comics.”
Is the artwork for the comics decided yet?
From Activision: “The series will release digitally in three installments, with the first issue out now. Each issue will be priced at $3.99. It is written by Dan Abnett (Guardians of the Galaxy), illustrated by Brian Level (Captain America), and colored by Sunny Gho (Star Wars).”
We didn’t get to see much of it, but the info they have – in addition to the fact that it’s being written by Dan Abnett (Guardians of The Galaxy) – leads me to believe this will be a lot darker than previous CoD comics. It would NOT come as any surprise if zombies were involved.
They’ve shown how zombies can infect computers before, so we are sure they could work that into comics too. Who knows? Perhaps they’ll throw in some backstory about the Russian military getting infected. Maybe there will be an explanation that nanotechnology is behind all this madness.
The artwork for the comic is yet to be decided. Activision and Marvel are considering recruiting well-known comic book artists such as John Cassaday (Astonishing X-Men) and J. Scott Campbell (Danger Girl).
