The founder and current head of the People’s Party of Canada, Maxime Bernier, has recently expressed his support for Canada’s wider adoption of bitcoin and cryptocurrencies.
Bernier has criticized the Bank of Canada, the country’s central bank, for being a big hurdle to the economy’s growth. He has also urged Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to make major changes to his economic policies.
“Many people are asking if I support #Bitcoin and cryptos. Of course, I do! I hate how central banks are destroying our money and economy. I’m more of an old-fashioned gold & silver fan, but cryptos are another new and innovative way to counter this that should be encouraged,” Bernier said in a tweet.
Mad Max
The crypto-supporting politician, who is also known as “Mad Max”, is a former cabinet minister. Aside from criticizing the country’s central bank, he is also known to openly criticize the vaccine policies in Canada as the number of COVID-19 cases in the country continues to rise.
Bernier is also against the implementation of the vaccine passport system and pushes to end lockdowns and mask use for good.
As Canada’s federal election nears, which will happen on Monday, Canadian politicians are starting to increase their efforts to get noticed by the public. Bernier’s People’s Party of Canada currently has no seats in the country’s parliament.
Canada’s crypto climate
Bernier’s stance in cryptocurrencies only reflects the country’s growing interest in the digital asset class, but the government remains cool on fully adopting such.
A lot of Canadian lawmakers, including Trudeau, are not critical of cryptocurrencies, but they aren’t advocates either.
Many analysts say that this silence from politicians indicates that they are carefully weighing the benefits and risks of embracing cryptocurrencies since these virtual assets are both beneficial and dangerous for the country’s economy.
