Cardi B has recently posed on the cover of a footwear magazine for its November 2020 issue. After posing as Goddess Durga and accused of being disrespectful, the rapper apologized.
The footwear magazine cover features Cardi B with ten hands. Instead of holding weapons, the rapper is seen holding a shoe. The rapper said in her statement that the creatives told her that she would represent a goddess during the shoot.
She also added that the goddess she was asked to portray has to represent strength, femininity, and liberation. And again, something that she loves and she’s all about. The actress revealed that it was never her intention to offend any religion or culture.
Cardi B shared she should have done her research
In a video where Cardi B made her statement posted in her Instagram story, she said she doesn’t like to offend any religion. “If people think that I am offending their culture or their religion, I want to say that was not my intent,” she said.
The rapper also added, “When people dress as Virgin Mary and Jesus, as long as they do it in a beautiful, graceful way. But I wasn’t trying to be disrespectful; maybe I should have done my research.”

The 28-year old musician remained on her stand that her purpose is not to mock any beliefs. She concluded by saying her “sorry” once again and expressed that she will do more research next time.
The magazine’s defense
The footwear magazine then explained on Instagram through a post about Cardi B’s print. It said that the musician paid homage to Durga, the Hindu goddess.
It elaborated that the goddess’s symbol of protection and inner strength resonate as much in modern times as they have through the centuries.
Moreover, it expressed that, like Durga, Cardi B is a dominant female voice at a critical time.
The grumpy netizens
Regarding the concept of the photoshoot, the netizens are unhappy. They then called the rapper for hurting sentiments.
A Twitter user wrote, “Cardi B did not pay ‘homage’ to the Hindu goddess Durga by holding a shoe in her hand. This is direct disrespect and in no way cultural appreciation.”
Meanwhile, other Indians took severe offense at this representation of the goddess. They criticized Cardi for her bare-bodied homage to the goddess.
Another netizen commented, “It is prohibited to wear shoes in a temple, and this woman is holding a shoe on her hand depicting goddess Durga?”
