Chris Evans is playing a new and different hero! The Captain America star has joined the Toy Story franchise as Buzz Lightyear in an upcoming film set for 2022.
The Disney Company announced the new movie, Lightyear, during its annual Investor Day event on Dec. 10. Following the confirmation, Chris Evans posted more details on his Twitter account to say that this will be the origin story of the character fans have loved since the 1990s.

Evans also shared a message on Instagram about working with Pixar, the animation studio, and what’s in store for the origin film.
“I’ve been a massive fan of their films since the very beginning,” the actor said. “Trust me when I say that they REALLY know what they’re doing over there.”
The actor also shared that Pixar and Disney pitched him an amazing story that he couldn’t stop smiling during his meeting. Evans promised fans that Lightyear would be a special movie.
Taking over for Tim Allen
Tim Allen voiced Buzz Lightyear, the action figure, in all of Toy Story movies alongside Tom Hanks as Woody. In the new film, however, the character will be the human version inspired by the toy, thus the necessary recast.
According to Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter, Lightyear will be a science fiction animation, which could potentially expand the world of the space ranger.
Evans also said that no one could replace Allen’s performance as the first voice of Buzz Lightyear. The origin story is also not going to step on the Toy Story’s version of the character. Essentially, the upcoming prequel will be a different version of Buzz Lightyear, and the story will delve into his exploits as a young test pilot.
Angus MacLane has been tapped to direct the animated film. Lightyear won’t be screening until the summer of 2022, and it’s expected to be in the streaming service Disney+.

Evans takes a swab test
Currently, Chris Evans is working on the set of Don’t Look Up. On the day of Lightyear’s announcement, the actor was photographed taking a COVID-19 swab test on the set in Boston.
Don’t Look Up is about two astronomers who go to the media to warn the world about this impending asteroid destruction. Evans’ role is unclear, but the movie also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, Matthew Perry, Jonah Hill, Timothee Chalamet, Ariana Grande, and Meryl Streep. It will be released on Netflix, but the streamer has yet to confirm the date.
