While serving his no-parole prison sentence, Ross Ulbricht’s NFT collection illustrates a mournful but hopeful portrait of a man who has had plenty of time to reflect on his life’s significance.
On the SuperRare marketplace, convicted Silk Road mastermind Ulbricht is auctioning personal artworks as NFTs.
The Ross Ulbricht Genesis Collection consists of one-of-a-kind artworks created by Ulbricht during his infancy and time in prison.
There are 10 NFTs in total, including pencil drawings and poetry among them. “Mom’s Dae,” “Dolphin,” “I Hope the War is Over,” “Quicksilver,” “You Lookin’ at Me?,” ”The Trial I Saw,” ‘Life in a Box,” “Uncageable,” “Perspective” and ”Death” are the titles of the separate works.
The auction winner will receive an NFT of an animation made up of all of Ross’ artworks. The NFT collection will be curated by Entoptic.
Why collect NFTs now?
Ulbricht has spent nine years in prison and has seen firsthand the toll a prison sentence can have on a family’s relationships.
He wants to raise money to enable convicts’ children to visit their detained parents. FreeRossDAO is a group of investors hoping to gather funds to bid for the Genesis Collection and help liberate Ulbricht from his life sentence through legal actions and public awareness.
To some, Ulbricht is still a hero
Ulbricht was apprehended in 2013 after the FBI shut down the Silk Road online marketplace, which took bitcoin as payment for narcotics and later firearms and operated as a TOR hidden site to evade detection.
His fans regard him as a pioneer who introduced people to bitcoin when it was still in its infancy. Ulbricht was convicted and sentenced to two life sentences plus 40 years in prison without the possibility of parole in 2015.
