More than 68.9 million coronavirus cases are still active today.
Two years have gone by since the coronavirus pandemic began. But, despite this, the finality of the crisis remains out of sight.
Although many experts believe that its near end is near, the COVID-19-causing virus continues to impact the lives of millions of people across the globe.
This is not the case, though, for a few countries. As reported, some have not encountered cases of infection ever since the virus emerged.
India.com listed some of the nations that have recorded zero COVID-19 transmissions.
COVID-free countries around the globe
The publication said that Tokelau, Kiribati, Nauru, Tuvalu, and Cook Islands are some of the countries that have never experienced COVID-19. They are islands, and most are remote, which is possibly one of the reasons why the virus never reached their respective borders.
Many of these nations restricted travels, if not prohibited. Although some are already accepting visitors from various locations, measures to keep the novel coronavirus at bay remain apparent.
Vaccinations against COVID-19 are also available in these regions. Among the five, though, Cook Islands has the highest vaccination rate as it has already vaccinated 97 percent of its population.
WHO’s list of nations with zero infections
The Indian Express recently released a similar report, as well, with claims that the list has come from the World Health Organization. It includes the above-mentioned island countries, in addition to North Korea and Turkmenistan.
The outlet noted, however, that the latter has received questions from medical experts and officials around the globe for its claims of not having had any coronavirus cases. Accordingly, this appears to be an assertion more than a substantiated claim.
The same list also includes the islands of Saint Helena, Niue, and Pitcairn Islands. The vaccination rates in these countries are high, as well, with the latter even reaching 100 percent.
The status of the coronavirus pandemic
As for the rest of the world, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to make its impact known. With the new infamous variant, Omicron, many countries are seeing record cases of infections and even hospitalisations.
Worldometer reports that there were more than 3.3 million new cases across the globe on Tuesday. As for the number of new deaths, the publication recorded a total of 9,837 for the same day.
Overall, the world has recorded over 359 million coronavirus infections in the last two years. About 98 percent of the closed cases have already recovered from the illness.
