As of today, the COVID-19 pandemic is affective more than 200 countries and territories across the globe.
The Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus continues to wreak havoc around the world. This only goes to show that the COVID-19 pandemic is far from over.
Experts believe, however, that this is already the beginning of the end of the global crisis. But, as to when its actual conclusion will be, confirmations have yet to emerge.
In an effort to inform the public, several publications keep tabs of all the data and figures relating to the pandemic. These mainly center on infections and transmissions, deaths, and vaccination rates around the world.
COVID-19 cases continue to surge in many countries
Following the movements of the infamous Delta variant, the Omicron strain has seemingly overtaken its place amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The latter is now the most dominant strain in various countries and territories.
The world has seen record cases of new infections in the last few weeks due to the said variant. This appeared to have continued seven days ago, with the world recording more than 23.2 million new cases.
To date, the total number of infections and transmissions has already reached 375,240,488, according to Worldometer. About 80 percent of the figure are already closed cases, which ended in either death or recovery.
The publication, nevertheless, reports that more than 98 percent recovered from the infection.
Millions have died due to the pandemic
The rate of death due to COVID-19 appears minute in comparison to the overall cumulative cases. But, in actual figures, this equates to millions of casualties in the last two years.
In the data table from the World Health Organization, it states that the death toll amid the coronavirus crisis has already reached more than 5.6 million.
The United States tops the list with more than 850,000, while Brazil comes in second with over 600,000.
In the last seven days, the global health agency tallied nearly 60,000 deaths. The U.S. accounts for 27 percent of the number.
Vaccination status around the world
As for the vaccinations, Our World In Data says that about 61 percent of the world population has already received at least a dose of the vaccine. Nearly 90 percent of them have already completed the initial vaccination series, while the rest have only obtained a jab.
Despite reaching more than half of the total population, only about ten percent has come from low-income nations.
So far, these are the latest figures of the COVID-19 pandemic.
