Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time is adding new hard levels fittingly called Flashback Tapes. Moreover, players who collected the Flashback Tapes open up puzzle rooms that are tough and brutal.
Initially released in 1996, Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time has come a long way in terms of game features. After the release of the 1998 edition, Crash Bandicoot: Warped, fans have been anticipating a sequel.
The new feature was announced during the Gamescom 2020’s Opening Night Live event. In incorporating the new levels, Developer Toys for Bob aims to bring back the players to Crash and Coco’s history before the original trilogy.
What is the Flashback Tapes all about?
The Flashback Tapes is the new game mechanic that allows Crash to revisit his early life with Coco. Producer Lou Studdert shared a glimpse of what to expect in the new game mechanic. She said:
“They are a peek back in time to the ’90s when Neo Cortex was actually testing on Crash and Coco before the events of Crash Bandicoot 1. It’s kind of our homage to the death routes in the original trilogy. Players have to reach these objects in the level, pick them up, and once they get them they’ll get access to these unique levels.”

The hardest part of obtaining the Flashback Tapes is to finish the said level without dying. Studdert also mentioned that the new feature would increase in difficulty. She further said:
“We used these as puzzle rooms, nefarious ways for Crash to really express that pure platforming aspect. Narratively, it was really cool to layer from a unique perspective. This is when Cortex is really excited about the prospect of Crash being on his team since Crash was originally created by Cortex, so it’s a weird point in time that’s never really been explored in the games before.”
Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time is packed with other features
As seen in the trailer, Toys for Bob has done a great job in blending classic and modern elements in the game. Aside from the Flashback Tapes feature, the new Crash game is also packed with exciting twists.

The N. Verted mode is one of the many cool features to try on. This is a twist on the mirror mode that is found mostly in racing games. The N. Verted mode can transport Crash into a colorless world. However, Crash can spin around to paint the world to see the direction he’s heading.
