In its statement, CD Projekt Red mentioned that an “unidentified actor” is involved in the cyber attack. And that it also compromised its internal systems.
However, it ensured the players of its games, especially Cyberpunk 2077, that there’s no risk to their data.
“We are still investigating the incident; however, at this time, we can confirm that — to our best knowledge — the compromised systems did not contain any personal data of our players or users of our services.”
Speaking in short, then the hackers are demanding a hefty ransom.
“We will not give in to the demands nor negotiate with the actor, being aware that this may eventually lead to the release of the compromised data,” said the developer.
Further, the company also shared what the hackers are demanding. The ransom note revealed that the cyber attackers had dumped complete copies of the source code from the Perforce server for Cyberpunk 2077. This server also hosts copies of Witcher 3, Gwent, and an unreleased version of Witcher 3.
The note directly threatens that if no agreement is reached, hackers will leak the source codes. Plus, CDPR’s documents might go to some contacts in gaming journalism. The given request is for two days (48 hours).
CD Projekt Red facing consistent problems
It seems like the cycle of problems isn’t going to end soon when it comes to the Polish developer. Since 2020, they are witnessing unexpected situations comprising of chaos. Previously it was due to the biggest game launch in years. Sadly that didn’t go down well.
Upon its release, at last, in December, Cyberpunk 2077 made headlines. They were mainly due to the wrong reasons, though. Fans and die-hard gamers turned angry. And it was apparent as the title didn’t end up great as per their expectations.
Barring several instances of good PC performance, most of the players complained of its graphics. And there were a ton of other stability issues as well. Despite immersive gameplay and gripping story, it failed somehow.
Now the latest cyber attack and the hacking case are not a good sign for CD Projekt Red. They must handle it as soon as possible, no matter what.
