The NBA is three weeks away from the NBA Draft Night. Speculations for the top picks are plenty, and teams are busy weighing their options. Teams that don’t have high picks on this year’s draft class will still be scouting for potential trades.
The Dallas Mavericks, for its part, have the 18th and the 31st pick on November 18. They will reportedly be aggressive in trying to trade up the lottery. As such, all players except Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis are tradeable.
Earlier during the season, the Dallas Mavericks surprised many when it gave a shock against the Clippers. They lost the series, but they earned the respect of many teams around the league. Leading the pack was Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis. Had the latter not been sidelined by injury, there’s no telling how deep they could have gotten in the Playoffs.
The Mavericks know that they have the potential to win many more games next season with this powerful duo. However, outside of them they still need another solid option to boost the team. They want to win now despite the duo’s relatively young age.
A recent report indicated that Dallas wants to catch a big fish in the market. As such, key role players in its roster are vulnerable to be traded. This goes against the earlier report that the Mavericks are saving their cap space to accommodate a big-ticket player like Giannis Antetokounmpo in the 2021-2022 season.
Also, trading up the draft also contradicts this bit of information. Nonetheless, it is pretty clear that the future of the Dallas Mavericks lies with the success of the Doncic-Porzingis tandem.
The 1 and the 5 position of the Mavericks’ roster is pretty much set. However, their wing scoring and defending has lots of room to improve on. If they want to win more games as soon as possible, Dallas will have to upgrade the current players in the wing spots.
Currently, they have Dorian Finney-Smith, Tim Hardaway Jr., and Justin Jackson manning the fort. However, they all have their own weaknesses, which opposing teams almost always take advantage of.
Dallas can still wait for DFS to develop into a stronger defender, but that could take a while. He has shown glimpses of what he can do when he’s locked in so Dallas can hold on to him. THJ, on the other hand, is a potent instant scorer whether as a starter or coming from the bench.
He will be an unrestricted free agent in the coming season, and he will definitely command a big contract. Dallas may want to steer clear from committing to him.
