Developer Red Hook Studios announced that Darkest Dungeon 2 would go into Early Access next year. The company will release it with the Epic Games Store.
Darkest Dungeon 2 is a much-awaited sequel to their hit roguelike title. Red Hook will now enter Early Access as an Epic exclusive title for an entire year. Much like before, the studio will take advantage of the Early Access to shape their full game.
The Madness returns next year
Darkest Dungeon is one of the best, most in-depth titles of recent years. The Lovecraftian horror roguelike title is among the most challenging but most satisfying experiences out there. The sheer depth of their Antediluvian horrors is hard to remiss.
The madness will start once more with the sequel, starting as an Early Access title. Together with the announcement, Red Hook also released a new trailer.
The new trailer shows off some old heroes of the hamlet fighting off crawling chaos. So far, the title’s meta-gameplay will change, but it will likely stay as a roguelike game.
The new models look fantastic, with crisper details and more monsters. Together with the old teaser, the new trailer suggests that the game will take a new story. They will likely take a spin on Lovecraft’s At The Mountains of Madness from the hints they showed.
So far, the game hints that some favorite heroes will return. These will include the Man-at-Arms, Plague Doctor, Highwayman, Graverobber, and Occultist. Fans will also likely see their two favorite named characters in the game, Reynauld, and Dismas.
Red Hook brings back Wayne June, signature cel-shaded art
Darkest Dungeon 2 is one of the much-awaited sequels for a near-perfect game. The game also keeps a few creature comforts, together with their successful formula.

The narrator and voice of the “Ancestor,” Wayne June, returns for the next game for starters. His quips and phrases give the game credence and atmosphere. Him being the voice of the franchise adds so much credence to the narrative.
The cel-shaded art style is also coming back if the trailers are accurate to the game. Chris Bourassa’s art keeps the darkness of the game ever-looming.
Chris himself promises that the game will have a new, stylized 3D art.
“Darkest Dungeon II is about hope, grit and determination,” said Bourassa in a press release. “It reminds us that in times of crisis, we can’t wait for salvation, we have to find it ourselves – earn it, in spite of our weaknesses.”
“Our familiar companions band together for another journey into oblivion – this time in stylized 3d! In fact, this teaser was captured straight out of Unity, and uses the in-game character models and rendering techniques from the game itself. With a refined combat system and a whole new metagame, Darkest Dungeon II is packed with fresh monsters, bosses, and challenges.”
Darkest Dungeon 2 will be an Epic Exclusive throughout its Early Access. Knowing Epic, this will likely last for an entire year, in a similar vein as Hades did. The full game will release on all PC storefronts, with more details on console release soon.
