Dax Shepard had relapsed after 16 years of sobriety, and he felt guilty for not being upfront about it immediately.
Dax Shepard opened up about his addiction struggle recently and admitted his relapse. He felt bad for not opening up about it immediately and accepted the fact that he is not special, and just like the others – he is still battling addiction.
Dax Shepard admits relapse after 16 years of sobriety
“I have a tremendous amount of fear about doing this,” he said on Friday’s episode of Armchair Expert podcast via Us Weekly.
“Maybe some people will feel a sense of betrayal because we preach honesty and I was being dishonest.”
Kristen Bell’s husband admitted he had fallen off the wagon and was taking Vicodin. He said it would be unfair to blame it on his motorcycle accident in August. He admitted his struggle started back in 2012 when he was already eight years into sobriety.
At the time, his dad was dying, and he went with him for his medication. He also got into a motorcycle accident while going to work on Parenthood. He was in a lot of pain, and his friends have Vicodin, so he started taking those medicines too.
Shepard admitted that he and his dad are both addicts. Then, he started taking twice of his prescription. He admitted it felt shady, but he excused himself, saying he deserved to take two Vicodin because he was in a lot of pain.
“That again doesn’t feel that crazy. … [But] I’m lying to other people and I know I have to quit … I start getting really scared, and I’m starting to feel really lonely. And I just have this enormous secret,” Bell’s husband shared.
Shepard eventually told his wife Kristen Bell and co-host Monica Padman about his struggles. He also attended several meetings after taking “30 mil Oxys.”

Shepard already seven days clean
Dax Shepard celebrated his 16-year sobriety anniversary earlier this month. However, he admitted that he was high during the celebration. In his recent podcast, he admitted he was just seven days clean.
““I’ve had a lot of friends that I’ve watched go through this whole cycle, and I finally have the humility to say I will not be any different,” he continued.
“I won’t be special. I won’t be smarter. I will be exactly like everyone else.”
Shepard on his new start of sobriety
Dax Shepard shared a photo of him with the words “Day 7” on Instagram. In the caption, he admitted that the episode was something he never hoped to record. But he owed it to the beautiful Armcheries who have been with him on his ride.
Several praised Shepard for being honest with what he went through. Many agreed that addiction struggle isn’t easy and they are proud of Shepard for handling it.
