The Days of Our Lives production is currently on hiatus, while the negotiations between NBC and Sony Pictures Television for season 57 renewal are still ongoing.
Days of Our Lives is one of the longest-running scripted shows in the United States. However, fans are worried that it might not return for another season because it hasn’t been renewed yet.
‘Days of Our Lives’ renewal update
Days of Our Lives has been airing on weekdays since November 1965. Filming for Season 56 has just concluded, and the production is on hiatus while NBC and Sony Picture Television work on a deal for another season, TVLine reported.
The outlet noted that it is very likely that the show will be renewed for another season since the writers are already planning on one. It even quoted an insider saying that “everyone is proceeding under the assumption that the show will be back.”
Deadline has been following the situations too for weeks and noted that the negotiations are still ongoing. However, the outlet added that there hasn’t been any cause for alarm, and the insiders are hopeful that Days of Our Lives will be renewed for a record 57 season.
In anticipation of renewal, the producers have been making if-come deals with key cast members in the past few weeks, which is another indication that the long-running soap will continue.
The renewal negotiations have taken months in each season in the past couple of years. So, the current case is not new at all. It’s normal for negotiations to take months, especially that the show’s business model has to be adjusted because of declining linear ratings, Deadline reported. The outlet added that the show is no longer profitable for Sony TV. However, the studio and the network are both committed to keeping the show on the air.
How did the negotiations affect the viewers?
The NBC soap shoots episode quite far ahead of broadcast, so the episodes aren’t affected yet. In fact, when the filming schedule halted due to the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020, Days still had a lot of episodes stockpiled to see them through the fall.
A TVLine insider said there are “several more months” before the current negotiations would impact the viewing schedule of Days of Our Lives. At present, the viewers will still enjoy fresh episodes.
