Morena Baccarin played Vanessa in the first two Deadpool movies, which Fox produced in 2016 and 2018. Her character met her death in the second movie, but Vanessa may return via time travel once the character is in the MCU.
According to We Got This Covered, Marvel plans to replace Baccarin with an A-list actress. The news outlet’s sources also said that Vanessa wouldn’t be introduced in the MCU franchise until Deadpool 4.
Ryan Reynolds plays the titular role as the mercenary who mutated as the disfigured superhero Deadpool. Also known as Wade Wilson, the expert marksman was originally characterized as a humorous supervillain in the X-Men comics. However, he’s a fan-favorite superhero in the film version.
In a recent interview with Fast Company, Reynolds updated fans on what’s going on with Deadpool following the Disney/Marvel’s buyout deal with Fox.
“Three words: I don’t know,” Reynolds said. “Obviously, everything is on pause right now.”
Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld also said that he has no idea where Marvel plans to take the movie and the character.
“There may not be another Deadpool, and I’m fine,” the creator said. “Because I have to live with the fact that I had two amazing experiences, two movies I’m extremely proud of, I love knowing everybody in those movies.”
Fans thought that the third film would be in Phase 4 of the MCU following confirmations from Disney boss Alan Horn and Marvel boss Kevin Feige. The studio executives said that they are considering the addition of Reynolds’ character. He might not be family-friendly by MCU standards, but Horn said in April 2019 that fans would see more of the Merc with the Mouth “in the years to come.”
However, MCU’s Phase 4 announcement last summer did not include a Deadpool movie. By December 2019, Reynolds said that the third movie’s development remains active. The star’s stance changed again by May 2020. Reynolds hinted that he’s still not familiar with the ins and outs at Marvel.
“I think once I’m more intimate with it – if we get to make a Deadpool 3…if or when we get to make a [movie]. I’ll probably have a better perspective on that,” Reynolds said.
