Deltarune’s latest chapter dropped last week to a massive concurrent player record on Steam, exceeding Undertale by a wide margin.
Toby Fox surprised the gaming community last week when it released the newest chapter of its developing project, Deltarune. It has been nearly three years since the first chapter, which was brought to public on October 31, 2018. Initially, the game saw the launch on computer platforms, Windows and MacOS. But it was eventually launched on the PS4 and the Switch on February 28, 2019. While simplistic in its approach to design, the game is actually in development since 2012.
Get it for free
Chapter 2 can be downloaded either via itch.io or Steam for free, which gives fans a follow-up experience from the original chapter. As for the title in its entirety, it was made to be played by those who previously experienced Undertale. With a large fan base, it’s no wonder how fans have shown strong support for Deltarune. So much, in fact, that the game managed to surpass the former’s peak concurrent player record by 10 times.
Steam players in general are known to leave behind their footprint whenever they play games. One of the most valuable data they leave behind is what game they play specifically. SteamDB is particularly the site to go to when going into the analytics for any specific title, like its highest simultaneous player count. Six years ago, Undertale made its own record when a little more than 10,000 players were playing the game at the same time. That was around the latter part of 2015. But this record does not seem much when compared to Deltarune, which, following its latest chapter release, has hit more than 100,000.
Unsurprising Feat
Deltarune making such a feat should not be a surprise, however. Prior to its full charge-free launch, its demo was already generating much traffic at itch.io. Too much traffic, in fact, that the title temporarily managed to shut the entire website down. A site closing down after being too encumbered by numerous internet users does not usually happen. Unless, of course, there’s really a strong point of interest in that source. The game’s demo offering only shows so much demand that it does become a phenomenon to behold.
While it remains uncertain when the next three chapters will drop, the development team is now greater in number than ever. Meaning, there’s a potential for a shorter development cycle between chapters moving forward.
