Anime movie Demon Slayer has crossed the mark of $150 million in Japan. The film has achieved the feat in just 17 days of release.
According to Variety, the movie Demon Slayer Mugen Train has revived a suffering box-office in Japan. Despite COVID-19 and strict guidelines, it managed to exceed expectations.
Official reports of co-distributor Aniplex showed that nearly 11.9 million viewers went to theaters.
During the last weekend, the anime flick made $24 million. The total domestic collection now stands at around $151 million.
Japan witnessing a big boom with Demon Slayer
Aniplex and Toho released Mugen Train on October 16 in 403 theaters. In just ten days, it broke the mark of $100 million in Japan. It is a new record in the country.
The previous milestone was 2001’s Spirited Away, which earned $100 million under 25 days.
Apart from this, Demon Slayer also broke the record of opening weekend. In the first three days, it collected $44 million.
Its IMAX earnings of $8.9 million are second only to Bohemian Rhapsody‘s $13.4 million. Interestingly, the latter took four months to do that.
The blockbuster anime movie is based on the popular manga series. It shows a boy who loses his family and then fights human-eating demons.
Japan sees a big success at the box-office as opposed to the global scenario. It’s a total contrast right now since the entire world is going through the tough impact of COVID-19.
Cinema hall owners across the globe are currently worried. The source of their revenues is not there, and they can’t do anything about it.
Worldwide releases were delayed due to pandemic
Many new and upcoming big-budget films are already delayed and postponed. Yes, Japan is an exception, but others are not that fortunate.
Anticipated movies like Marvel’s Black Widow and Eternals are canceled this year. They will now arrive next year.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Spider-Man 3 are all delayed. Captain Marvel 2, Doctor Strange 2, and Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 are also pushed further.
Other production houses are facing a similar situation. MGM’s No Time To Die was due to arrive this month. Now, it’s shifted to April 2021.
DC’s The Batman and Wonder Woman 1984 suffered a lot of delays and release issues. Gal Gadot starred sequel to 2017’s hit film was targeting December 2020 dates of Christmas. But now it won’t be possible because of the pandemic.
Coming to Demon Slayer once again, it will soon arrive in the US early next year. Aniplex of America and Funimation will distribute it in the region.
