Demon’s Souls is the first—and some would argue the most unforgiving—in a long line of hyper difficult games that bear the “Souls” name in some shape or form.
In fact, it was likely the title that spawned the “Soulslike” genre, which pertains to games with high difficulty, while sharing similarities in gameplay to the Souls series.
Fans have been calling for the game’s remaster or remake ever since the release of the PlayStation 4, which makes JAPAN Studio’s announcement of a complete Demon’s Souls remake on the PlayStation 5 that much more of a treat.
The big announcement was made during Sony’s grand PlayStation 5 reveal event, along with a host of other interesting titles also headed to the upcoming console.
The Demon’s Souls remake cinematic announcement trailer lasted a minute and forty-six seconds and didn’t show all that much beyond the cool new graphics and a bunch of familiar enemies. Check out the YouTube video’s description below:
“From JAPAN Studio and Bluepoint Games comes a remake of the PlayStation classic, Demon’s Souls™. Entirely rebuilt from the ground up and masterfully enhanced, this remake invites you to experience the unsettling story and ruthless combat of Demon’s Souls in unparalleled visual quality and incredible performance. Coming to PlayStation 5”
Demon’s Souls was originally developed by a renowned video game development company From Software back in 2009. The Japanese developer went on to create several successors to the title, which are the three Dark Souls games, Bloodborne, and the more recent Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
What’s interesting is the noticeable absence of the From Software name in the Demon’s Souls announcement video, as the trailer stated that the game would be published by JAPAN Studio and developed by Bluepoint Games.
Bluepoint Games is an American independent developer that mostly worked on video game remasters, including the God of War Collection, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection.
The Texas-based developer was also responsible for the stellar 2018 remake of the classic PlayStation 2 title Shadow of the Colossus.
Despite being announced during the PlayStation 5 reveal event, it wasn’t explicitly mentioned that the game would be a console exclusive. Although, it wouldn’t be surprising if it were since the original Demon’s Souls was released solely on the PlayStation 3.
It’ll be weird not seeing From Software involved in the remake of the game that started the whole “Soulslike” craze, but judging from Bluepoint Games’ track record, the Demon’s Souls remake seems to be in good hands.
