Destiny 2: Beyond Light will be changing a ton of the game once it goes live. The changes are so expansive that devs suggest re-downloading the full game instead.
Destiny 2: Beyond Light is coming this November, and it will make a ton of overhauls. Much of the changes will come through cutting unnecessary content in the game and chucking it into the vault. Once it happens, players would need to reinstall.
Beyond Light to cut install size by up to 40%
Beyond Light is a superb overhaul to a beautiful but overly bloated online game. Bungie plans to trim the game down to around half its current content for better longevity. If this will make the game better or worse still needs to be seen.
Even then, the vast changes would mean removing much of the game’s files. Since Bungie hard-coded these maps and items into the game, they suggest uninstalling and re-downloading the game from scratch.
“Due to all these changes, Beyond Light will be a full re-download on all platforms—we know this will be painful for those with slower or metered internet connections, and we’re sorry about that,” said Bungie during their “This Week At Bungie” update post.
“To help mitigate this, we’re planning to enable Beyond Light preloads sometime in the evening of November 9, Pacific Time, which should give everyone at least 10 hours to download before the gates open.”
The silver lining in the entire situation is the shrinking install size. The game will have 30 to 40% less install size, which means a savings of up to 71GB in space. The game will also take less time to fix when bugs show up.
New update to Destiny 2 affords more mobility for Bungie
The changes that will come from Destiny 2: Beyond Light will help give Bungie the mobility they need. Every season, Bungie is having a hard time changing their content on the fly. The overhaul should help them ease this step.
“For example, historically each of our Seasons has had to get deep into production before the preceding season launched, preventing us from reacting to learnings from that preceding season,” wrote Bungie further.
“These tech improvements should give us 1-2 more weeks of flexibility on a Seasonal scale, helping us pivot more quickly in some cases.”
Beyond Light rebuilt a ton of areas of Destiny 2. For example, they updated the game’s engine from D1 to D2. They also rebuilt the character face system to offer more customization options to players.
While the upcoming Destiny 2: Beyond Light can be an annoying reinstall, it should be worth it. The game expects to go live by November 10, barring unforeseen troubles down the line.
