The compilation film Detective Conan: The Scarlet Alibi (Meitantei Conan: Hiiro no Fuzai Shōmei) finally hits Japan’s big screens, and it opened at #2 at the box office.
Detective Conan: The Scarlet Alibi was released in anticipation of the upcoming Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet (Meitantei Conan: Hiiro no Dangan). In its four days, the film earned 251,886,500 yen (about US$2.38 million). It also sold 92,000 tickets and earned 126,468,400 yen (about US$1.19 million) over the weekend. It was on Thursday that the film opened in Japan, a holiday.
The compilation film will have a three-week limited theatrical run from February 11 to March 4. As reported, it combines footage from various television anime episodes that center on the Akai family. The compilation film’s ending contains a video “secret message from Shuichi Akai” that will lead up to The Scarlet Bullet film, as well as The Scarlet Bullet‘s new trailer. Through a newly recorded and edited audio track, the titular character Conan narrates the compilation.

Meitantei Conan: Hiiro no Dangan is the franchise’s 24th film. On April 17 last year, the film was slated to open, but it was delayed from its original date due to concerns about the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19). With a simultaneous release in 22 countries and territories outside of Japan, the film will open on April 16 this year.
Demon Slayer: Mugen Train
On its 18th weekend, the Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train dropped to #3. The film earned 120,849,500 yen (about US$1.14 million) from Friday to Sunday as it sold 77,000 tickets over the weekend. Also, the movie has sold a total of 27.27 million tickets and earned a cumulative total of 37,488,979,550 yen (about US$355.4 million).
Furthermore, the film dropped to #2 during the January 9-10 weekend after 12 consecutive weeks at #1 in Japan’s box office. The film sold 425,000 tickets during that weekend and earned 677,783,450 yen (about US$6.57 million) from Friday to Sunday. On its 14th weekend, the film returned to the #1 spot.
Gintama: The Final
The new anime film of Hideaki Sorachi’s Gintama manga, Gintama: The Final, dropped from #5 to #7 in its sixth weekend. From Friday to Sunday, the film earned 63,721,000 yen (about US$604,100). The movie has sold a total of 1.11 million tickets and has made a cumulative total of 1,553,207,900 yen (about US$14.72 million).
On January 8, the film opened at #1 in Japan and ended Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train’s 12 consecutive weekends at the top of the Japanese box office.
Poupelle of Chimney Town
Akihiro Nishino’s anime film of Studio 4°C, Poupelle of Chimney Town (Entotsu-chō no Poupelle), dropped from #4 to #8 in its eighth weekend. From Friday to Sunday, the film earned 49,354,850 yen (about US$467,900). It has made a cumulative total of 2,070,369,100 yen (about US$19.62 million) as it sold a total of 1.49 million tickets.
In its opening weekend, the film ranked at #4 and earned 322,998,700 (about US$3.13 million). On December 25, the film opened in Japan.
Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle
Meanwhile, the 23rd anime film in the Pokémon franchise, Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle (Gekijōban Pocket Monster Koko), dropped from #7 to #9 in its sixth weekend. The film earned about US$289,900 (30,585,300 yen) from Friday to Sunday. The film has also sold a total of 1.36 million tickets and has made a cumulative total of 1,597,459,100 yen (about US$15.14 million).
