Pearl Abyss’ developing major project an open-world, spirit-collecting game called DokeV.
RPG fans who enjoy playing Pokemon, Yokai Watch, and/or Kingdom Hearts will have something big to look forward to. Coming from the skilled developers from South Korea that recently brought Black Desert into the market, a new developing title is in the works. Interestingly, a game that resembles many aspects of the games aforementioned, but with a Korean twist.
From Korean Mythology and Folklore
Derived from the mythical folklore of dokkaebi from Korea, DokeV features a cutesy visual and is about collecting spirits. Literally translating to “Korean goblins,” said spirits are entities which come with their own unique powers and abilities. Given the polarizing nature of the legend behind dokkaebis, so, too, are they in-game. In it, they either serve as inspiration that help people attain their dreams or be a cause of their trouble. But the game designer, Changkee Nam, claims that the concept of dokkaebi serves as an inspiration to him.
Aside from the myths to which DokeV stem from, it also seems to draw inspiration from other franchises. In particular, the notion of catching spirits which can be used as allies in combat, akin to either Pokemon or Yokai Watch. With a third-person fighting mechanics, the game also seems to take inspiration from either Yokai Watch 4 or Kingdom Hearts.
Development Changes
The game appears to be in development for a while now. Coming from the recently-launched Future Games Show at Gamescom, we get to peek at its most recent development. At the outset, one of the most obvious highlights of the game is undoubtedly its graphics and art style. Essentially, a mix of cartoonish character looks set at a vivid and realistic-looking backdrop. The character movements’ almost life-like depiction seems to also reflect how the developers employ real people movement as an inspiration.
Many things about the game have changed since its initial publicity. But not all of those changes may have been expected. Originally, the game was touted to be an MMO. A change in plan suggests that it has been scrapped in favor of single-player gameplay, but with a multiplayer elements. As of writing, the game is said to be in development for “PC and consoles”. Although, which consoles specifically is not yet concrete at this point. The same is also true about the release date, but is expected to come next year.
