According to a report by ATP Tour, Thiem said that he and Zverev came to know each other in 2014. The pair started as friends until they became rivals on the field and, at the same time, a great friends off the field.
He said that even Zverec equally deserved to win the championship, and he wished that there could be two winners so that it would be the two of them.
After Thomas Muster, who won the Roland Garros in 1995, Dominic Thiem became the next man from Austria to win a significant feat. At a young age, Thiem is a ray of hope for his country.
Historic win by Theim
Zverev held the lead for the first two sets of the match, but Theim made a very calm comeback into the game with his victory in two back-to-back sets.
With the final match going into the fifth set for the first time, it became a very stressful situation for fans all around.
Half of the game ended in service breaks of the fifth set, given the players were extremely tired. The epic battle came to an end when Zverev hit a backhand wide to wrap up play one minute over the four-hour mark.
Zverev ended on 159 points for the point while the champion, Theim, finished at 163. After winning the fifth set, the Austrian collapsed to the ground in delight.
