Dying Light 2 has a wonderful option for players who are looking forward to a tell-tale experience.
Dying Light 2 is giving players a choice that can change an entire city, whether to save or take the lives of any survivors in the area.
The choices are not limited to life or death but also cover which kind of survivor you help, if at all. So what’s the big deal? It may seem like a minor decision on paper, but it could be one of humanity’s last hopes for survival.
So, how would the choices work in the game?
According to lead designer Tymon Smektala, the choices you make will count across the whole of Dying Light 2, not just sections of it. “One choice may have consequences that you don’t understand [until] 20 hours into the [game],” he explained.
“We believe that choices and consequences always make a huge difference in your experience, and we can’t wait to tell more about it.”
That could mean you’ll be making a choice in one part of the game and reaping the rewards or suffering the consequences later on. The way this works is that your choices affect individual characters, factions, and cities. “We’re making a huge effort to make it feel that those choices matter,” Smektala continued. “Honestly, we fail at this every single time, and we’ll probably fail this time as well because it’s tough to pull off.”
Are the choices really important?
Players may not even realize how important their choice is until much later, which helps Dying Light 2 feel more immersive and helps make its world feel more meaningful.
“A lot of your choices will have consequences that you don’t understand until 20 hours into the game,” Smektala explained. That means you can’t wait to find out what’s happening in the city after you’ve made a choice, but players will have to wait and see. However, this is not a choice with a clear-cut path – there will be no right or wrong answers.
It’s very open. It’s very similar to the first game, but it’s more intense and better, with more consequences.”
The choices seem to give you a lot of freedom over what happens in the city. In the demo shown off at E3 2018, a large group of survivors you could help or not help. Or you could take out the enemies yourself. The ability to choose how you play is one of Dying Light 2’s biggest draws, as it lets players shape the world around them and gives them a sense of control over their experience.
