‘Elder Scroll 6’ Xbox exclusivity discussed: Still going to be multi-platform?

Share

The future of Bethesda titles, including Elder Scroll 6, currently lies in uncertainty, whether it’ll be exclusively to Xbox or still multi-platform.

The fate of the Elder Scroll 6 release is, fortunately, not impaired. GamesRadar reported mid-October, that the sixth installment is still happening. However, the deal on its exclusivity is quite uncertain, following Microsoft’s ZeniMax deal.

With the console war still at its peak, it is as if Microsoft and Sony decided to acquire as many games for console exclusivity. In fact, the game exclusivity became quite confusing, especially during Sony’s digital event.

Recently, Elder Scrolls and Fallout director, Todd Howard, sat down with Gamesindustry.biz, talking about Bethesda titles’ console exclusivity.

Elder Scrolls 6 as an Xbox exclusive: “hard to imagine”

Todd Howard echoed Phil Spencer’s statement of how Bethesda’s games being on “multiformat” will be on a “case-by-case basis.” He further expressed how open Microsoft is on offering their games for other platforms as well.

“We do view it, and always have by ourselves, on a case-by-case basis,” he says. “We’ll do that as part of Microsoft as well. They’ve been pretty open on other platforms and not just within Xbox,” says Howard. “This is an outside perspective, but if you go back ten years at Microsoft, you wouldn’t expect them to have a full Office suite on an iPhone either.”

On weighing on the part of the Elder Scrolls franchise, the director points out that “there has been some exclusivity on Xbox or with Microsoft.”

He cited previous Elder Scrolls titles, such as Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim‘s DLC either being a console exclusive or a long-time exclusive.

But for the sixth installment, Howard says it is “hard to imagine” to be an Xbox exclusive.

The decision for making a title exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem seems likely dependent on the current trend. As Howard says:

“We’ll decide what makes the best sense for our audience when the time comes, and I can’t really project today what that looks like.”

Per NME, this means that Elder Scrolls 6 could likely still be multiplatform.

Elder Scrolls 6: What do we know so far

Moreover, aside from the game’s exclusivity, the game is reportedly still “years” from being released. Bethesda is keeping mum about any developments of the game, as the devs swore, per GamesRadar.

By November 2021, it will mark the 10th anniversary of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Hopes were slim but the release of the trailer in 2018 sparked anew. However, things went silent right after.

It appears that Bethesda got its hands full with the development of both the Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises.
