Elizabeth Debicki has signed up for another challenging role this year. Netflix announced that it had chosen the actress to play Princess Diana in The Crown.
Elizabeth Debicki will be Prince Charle’s wife in the last two seasons of the said drama series. The show follows the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II, so The Crown will also feature Princess Diana and Prince Charles.
Debicki’s acceptance of the role
Netflix confirmed Debicki’s addition to the cast lineup of the drama through social media. On Aug. 17, the streaming service provider tweeted about her Di’s role and posted the actress’s statement as well.
“Princess Diana’s spirit, her words and her actions live in the hearts of so many,” Debicki stated. “It is my true privilege and honor to be joining this masterful series which has had me absolutely hooked from episode one.”
As per CNN News, Elizabeth Debicki will be in The Crown for seasons 5 and 6. The story where she will portray Princess Diana will cover the princess’ life in the 90s and early 2000s.
The viewers can expect to see the most turbulent periods in the Princess of Wales’ life. Her controversial marriage and death in Paris will also be covered in this historical drama.
Who is Elizabeth Debicki?
The new cast addition in the top-rating Netflix drama is 30 years old. She is an Australian of Polish origin and made a name after starring in The Great Gatsby in 2013.
She got her big break with the said Baz Luhrmann’s movie. She starred alongside A-list Hollywood stars such as Leonardo Di Caprio and Toby Maguire.
Elizabeth Debicki was born in Paris, but her family moved to Australia when she was five. She graduated from the University of Melbourne’s Victorian College of the Arts.
Her parents are both classic ballet dancers, so she has a strong dancing background. The actress was expected to follow their footsteps, but she took a different path and started acting.
The Crown was extended
Meanwhile, The Crown was originally planned to end with five seasons. Show creator Peter Morgan announced in January that they would wrap up Queen Elizabeth’s story in the fifth installment, but it was extended.
The show is now set to conclude in season 6, and Elizabeth Debicki will be in this finale. Morgan explained they had to add one more season after realizing they needed more time to finish the story of the British monarchy.
“As we started to discuss the storylines for series five, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons,” Netflix tweeted Peter Morgan’s statement.
