Ellen DeGeneres bids goodbye to talk show after 19 seasons

Ellen DeGeneres announced that her talk show will be airing its last season and will end in 2022.

Ellen DeGeneres will be moving on from the Ellen show. The award-winning host announced that season 19 will be its last and she will be moving on from it because it’s no longer challenging for her.

Ellen DeGeneres announces last season of Ellen

Ellen DeGeneres was embroiled in a controversy last year after one current and 10 former staffers complained about a toxic workplace. The host was able to come past the issue and was able to return for more seasons.

However, DeGeneres just confirmed that she’s left with one season. “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” will return for season 19, but it will also be the show’s last return on the small screen.

“When you’re a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged — and as great as this show is, and as fun, as it is, it’s just not a challenge anymore,” DeGeneres told The Hollywood Reporter.

It was the first time DeGeneres discussed her decision with the public. But she already informed her staff on May 11.

DeGeneres has been planning her exit all along

Ellen DeGeneres’ exit was a long time coming. In a New York Times profile in 2018, she shared that her wife, Portia de Rossi, had been encouraging her to move on from the 180-shows-a-year gig. However, DeGeneres’ comedian brother and the executives at Warner Bros. had urged her to continue.

The TV host agreed to sign three more seasons. However, she made it clear to her team that the said contract would be her last.

Warner Bros.’ unscripted TV president Mike Darnell was still prodding DeGeneres to reconsider her decision until late April. However, he also accepted that “all good things must come to an end.”

Ellen’s controversy revisited

Ellen DeGeneres has built her brand on the motto “Be Kind.” However, last year, a BuzzFeed News expose detailed the allegations of a toxic workplace on the show. Several former staffers and a current employee claimed how difficult it was to work with DeGeneres.

The production investigated the show and DeGeneres was still able to return for season 18. In its premiere episode, the host apologized to the people who were affected. She also took the issue very seriously and promised to improve.

However, Ellen’s viewership quickly tumbled despite having Hollywood’s A-list guests. Some were not surprised with DeGeneres’ announcement because they wanted her show to end following the scandal last year. Meanwhile, many were also sad because they loved the show and would miss DeGeneres.
