This week, Page Six revisited Ellen DeGeneres and de Rossi’s relationship in their segment, Hooked Up To Hitched.
According to Page Six, DeGeneres and de Rossi met at a party, and the latter quickly fell in love with the comedian. They saw each other again a few years later. But during this time, the couple was still in a relationship with their respective partners.
During an interview with People, DeGeneres that she didn’t think about having an affair with de Rossi. After all, she was in a long-term relationship with her previous partner.
“We were just supposed to be together. It was a tough decision,” she said.
A few years after they started dating, DeGeneres announced her engagement to de Rossi on The Ellen Show.
“So, I would like to say right now for the first time, I am announcing I am getting married,” she said.
The couple tied the knot at their home in Los Angeles. And their ceremony was attended only by a few family and close friends.
Fast forward to over a decade later, Ellen DeGeneres and de Rossi will soon celebrate their 12th wedding anniversary. However, things weren’t always easy for the couple because they were constantly plagued with divorce rumors and alleged marital problems.
“OK, let’s break it down. Ellen and Portia, obviously they’ve been through a lot over the years. And now they’re currently weathering toxic workplace rumors about the Ellen DeGeneres Show. What do you think? What’s going on here, Ellen?” the host said.
The female host then discussed some of the mean girl criticisms surrounding DeGeneres. She said that if the allegations are true, one can’t help but wonder how this is affecting the comedian’s marriage to de Rossi.
“I think there’s probably an Ellen that’s at work, who sounds like she’s kind of a bully. She burns through comedy writers and staff on her show. She, according to these allegations, targets people and makes fun of them, which is fine if you’re on stage, and you’re working for the crowd. But if you’re the boss of a talk show, it becomes a toxic workplace environment,” the male host said.
Following the recent allegations, DeGeneres released a statement saying that she’s taking responsibility for the toxic work environment claims because her name is on the show. She also vowed to become more involved and promised that the problems will be addressed.
“On day one of our show, I told everyone in our first meeting that The Ellen DeGeneres Show would be a place of happiness — no one would ever raise their voice, and everyone would be treated with respect. Obviously, something changed, and I am disappointed to learn that this has not been the case. And for that, I am sorry,” she said.
