Confirming on what’s most apparent from the start, Fortnite developer Epic has finally spilled the beans regarding the inspiration behind the game’s Impostor Mode.
Epic has previously made a not-so-surprising reveal when it launched a new feature for Fortnite called Impostor Mode. Originally, it was speculated to be an upcoming collaboration with Among Us at the time. The idea comes from hints arising from a datamine attempt. But the disclosure appears to be more intriguing as there has never been a crossover that apparently took place. Instead, Fortnite made an iteration of a famous gameplay mechanics and called it its own—neither crediting anything nor anyone.
Obvious reference
From the outset, it is obvious where the inspiration behind the battle royale game’s Impostor Mode come from. If you are not up-to-speed with gaming, then you probably haven’t heard of the latest craze over Among Us. A game that suddenly soared into popularity for its engaging multiplayer gameplay, which involves finding the secret killer among the players. However, the game has layers of complexity in it that makes finding said culprit more difficult than it appears.
In Impostor Mode, the premise plays pretty much the same—but with an ostensive Fortnite twist, that is. In the game, the mode revolves around a group of agents tasked to protect a certain institution, but unfortunately has a few saboteurs onboard. Like in Among Us, finding said enemies is not merely as looking at other players on face value. And that not every suspicion leads to the right choice, despite all the evidence. The game has that for complexity that makes it engaging among group of people.
To no credit
Upon the new feature’s introduction, Epic did not mention whether or not Among Us was the inspiration behind its creation. Although, even without an official word, the similarities are telling that that’s the case. But probably for a few good reasons. One being that Among Us developer InnerSloth is not necessarily the original minds behind the mechanics. The studio merely popularized a system and a theme that have been in existence for many years. A little search on the internet is enough to give the notion fruit as to where the game itself draws inspiration from—a tabletop game and a movie.
Epic admits
Amid Among Us’s own controversy, Epic is nonetheless is giving credit to where credit is due. And it comes in the admittance that the Impostor Mode indeed took inspiration from the game. That is already obvious and doesn’t necessarily require an explanation. But it’s probably out of common courtesy, or otherwise to rest the case, that Epic is no longer mouth shut about its recent in-game highlight.
