Everything you need to know about Google’s Pixel 4a

The Google Pixel 4a just made an accidental appearance on Google’s online store. The image is as clear as day but doesn’t showcase any surprises.

Google seems to have mistakenly released an image of the next-generation smartphone on its Canadian store. The Pixel 4A has already leaked extensively over the last few months, suggesting that the smartphone might finally be coming sometime soon.

Note also that the screen has a date of May 12th on it, which is pretty solid evidence that Google did initially plan to launch the Pixel 4A during its annual developer’s conference.

Price and availability

The main draw of Google’s A-line is its more affordable prices, according to CNET. When they first launched the Pixel 3a, the price is just $399. While the Pixel 3a XL cost $479.

We expect Google to manage the price of the Pixel 4a at relatively the same as 3a, especially since $399 appears to be a sweet spot when it comes to affordable handsets from premium phone-makers. However, rumors are floating around that the smartphone may launch at an even lower price.

In May, Stephen Hall of 9to5Google tweeted that the Pixel 4a could start at $349 instead of the leaked price at $399. Here’s the tweet:

Pixel 4a specs

Unfortunately, there are no surprises here. The upcoming Google Pixel 4a renders the look exactly as we expected with a single selfie camera cutout on the front, the only lens in the Pixel 4 camera module on the back, and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.

An all-black colorway for Google’s new smartphone is also expected. However, if there were any lingering doubts about what the Pixel 4a would look like, you can now throw them away.

The Pixel 3a comes with 64GB of internal storage with no option to expand. So, it is safe to assume that 4a will have something like that too!

Rumors are circulating that the next Pixel phone will have a hole-punch camera, which would be a neat touch. Also, since Google emphasized the camera prowess of Pixel phones in the past, it is safe to say that a top-tier rear camera setup from the Pixel 4a is coming.

Whenever it does officially go on sale, the phone is expected to be succeeded by the Pixel 5 sometime later this year. A 5G-compatible version of the 4a was also uncovered in the code for Google’s search application. However, it seems like the company might be ditching a potential 5 XL, similar to how it has stuck with a single size for the 4a.
